${\sigma _x}$ and ${\sigma _y}$ is the normal stress, ${\tau _{xy}}$ is the shear stress acts on the x edge in the $y$ direction, ${\tau _{yx}}$ is the shear stress acts on the $y$ edge in the $x$ direction.
